To receive Medicare rebates, you will need a referral from your GP (or a psychiatrist or pediatrician). You need to discuss with your doctors if you meet the requirements. They will complete a mental health assessment form and give you a referral to a registered psychologist. If you are referred under a Mental Health Care Plan, you are entitled to a Medicare Rebate for a maximum of 10 sessions per calendar year.
Your initial referral will allow a rebate to be claimed for 6 sessions. The initial session guides treatment approach/ goals/plan and how often the remaining sessions will be organised. After session 6, the psychologist is required to send a progress report to your GP, at which time your GP will review the report and you may be referred for a further 4 sessions.
